Double-Double for Moreton Cadet
14 year old Joe Cheong retained his DDTTA Cadet (U15) title after victory over Paul Oakley at the Abingdon Leisure Centre on Friday 29th April 2005. This victory was added to the Junior (U18) title which he won 4 weeks previously, again retained from the previous year.
Play at Abingdon started with one group of 10 players, with each playing a best of three ends against each other. This group of 10 also included other Moreton youngsters, Joe’s younger brother and sister, Nathan and Jessica, also new club member Charlie Lane. This was Charlie's first time in competition.
Jessica started her set of 9 matches confidently, winning her opening end with some excellent striking of the ball, but eventually lost 1-2 to Abingdon’s penholder Kota Goto in a closely contested match. Nathan on the other hand started slowly but picked up vital wins along the way, including a revenged 2-0 victory over Kota.
Charlie gained much experience along the way and had an excellent win over clubmate Jessica. Some games were close, but the result just going the other way.
Joe waited patiently for the opening matches to finish before starting his bid to retain the title. All his matches were won in 2 straight ends except for the match against Sutton’s Isobel Hessey. Joe won the first end reasonably easy but Isobel’s strong forehand flat hits were very consistent, edging the second game 10-12. This gave confidence to Isobel but Joe played a more attacking game to win the third and deciding end.
Joe’s 9th and final game was against Sutton’s Paul Oakley. Both players had recorded 8 wins out of 8; therefore the winner of this match would be crowned champion, and the loser finishing as runner-up. This was duly won by Joe 11-4, 11-5 in an open an entertaining final match.
