League Update, week ending 21st April 2006

Match Reports
Moreton A finished their season with a defeat at home against Drayton A for whom Craig Campbell and Matt Davies were in good form. Joe and Roger A won one each for us.
Moreton C were at home in a semi-final Handicap Shield match against Drayton D, who gained revenge for a recent league trouncing at Moreton. James won two and Roger T one, but Kevin Davies was on fire for the visitors.
But... our Bidmead team won the Bidmead Cup - here's Paul's report:

Nick played No.1, Cameron No. 2 and Joe No.3 so that Nick and Cameron could use their higher handicaps first. This proved a successful strategy as the team ran away to a 5-0 lead and guaranteed victory. Nick started it off with a 3-1 victory against Mike Walker, starting 2 points behind. Cameron followed with a 3-2 victory over Tom O’Sullivan, coming back from 1-2 down to win in 5. He started each game with a 6-point deficit. Joe played Derrick Cain third and won 3-0. They started with a 10-point difference, but Derrick only won 4, 3 and 0 points in the 3 games. Cameron then beat Mike 3-1 to make the tie score 4-0. Nick then took the honours of winning the cup by winning the 5th match 3-1 against Derrick. They decided to play on after the tie was won. Joe lost 0-3 to Tom. Cameron lost 2-3 to Derrick. Joe then beat Mike 3-1 and Nick beat Tom 3-2 to complete his maximum and a 7-2 victory.

League Update, week ending 7th April 2006

An excellent week for Moreton.
Moreton A are guaranteed to maintain their Division 1 status next year. They drew away to Division 1 runners up, Didcot B, with Chris Hansell registering a maximum, Roger A winning one and combining with Chris to win the decisive doubles. They then beat Sutton A 6-4 with Roger A getting a maximum, Paul winning 2 with a welcome return to form, and Joe 1. Joe was unlucky not to beat Roger Perry, losing 18-16 in the fifth!
Moreton B are promoted as champions from Division 3 with Richard, Tim and Cameron whitewashing Howbery B.
Moreton C are safe in mid table and have been kinder than B to Howbery B who are now safe from relegation. After relegating Abingdon H last week, they relegated Drayton D this week with Roger T and James registering maximums in the 7-3 victory. This was followed by a draw with Howbery B in which Roger T completed a hat trick of maximums and James won 2 (C only had two players).
Moreton D are promoted as champions from Division 4 following an 8-2 victory over Abingdon K in which Bob Price won three substituting for Nick Redding. Tak and Mike won two apiece and the doubles together.
Moreton E finished the season with our youngsters playing an experienced RAL E team. We lost 8-2 but Jessica won her first match and twin brother Nathan another.

League Positions:
A (Div 1): 9th: Roger A 13th, Joe 30th/59.
B (Div 3): Champions: Cameron 2nd, Tim 5th, Richard 7th.
C (Div 3): 7th: Roger T 11th, Ian 12th, James 23th
D (Div 4): Champions: Tak 3rd, Nick 5th, Mike 8th.
E (Div 4):  9th: Richard R 25th, Bob 30th.
Individual positions above are based on games won, rather than percentages.
On a percentage basis, which DDTTA use for best player awards, Cameron is top of Div 3

League Update, week ending 31th March 2006

Match reports:

Moreton A lost 8-2 to Crown: we only had two players as Roger A thought that 'home' meant Stansted Airport. However Joe, with broken little finger, beat Nigel Taylor, and Crown conceded the doubles.
Moreton B secured promotion with a good 8-2 win over Abingdon G with both Richard and Cameron registering maximums which included victories over Division 3 champion Jamie Leeder. The Division 3 title is now just a point away.
Moreton C went to Abingdon H and Roger T, Ian and James achieved their first whitewash.
Moreton D went to Abingdon K and won 8-2 with Bob Price substituting for Nick and getting a maximum. I believe this means D will be promoted as champions if they get one point from their last match against Wallingford.
I don't know what the E team did, but believe their recent results have enhanced D's Division 4 title aspirations. The previous week D beat RAL E 9-1 away with maximums from Nick Redding and Mike, and E beat Letcombe C 8-2 with Roger Haycock winning 3 and Bob and Richard Redding two apiece.

League Positions:
A (Div 1): 9th: Roger A 14th, Joe 29th/59.
B (Div 3): 1st and promoted: Cameron 4th, Tim 6th, Richard 7th.
C (Div 3): 7th: Roger T 11th, Ian 14th, James 29th
D (Div 4): 1st: Tak 2nd, Nick 5th, Mike 8th.
E (Div 4): 9th: Richard R 26th, Bob 30th.
Individual positions based on games won, rather than percentages.

League Update, week ending 17th March 2006

Match reports:

Moreton A: were home to Didcot A and lost 6-4 despite Roger A's maximum. North Moretonian Martin Haycock won two for Didcot, and Didcot-located Joe one for Moreton.
Moreton B: played Didcot F and won 8-2 with Cameron hitting another maximum including a win over Peter Sinclair.
Moreton C: had an away handicap quarter final against Abingdon G, but negotiated to play it at Moreton on Wednesday. Moreton were 4-3 down, but Roger T beat Maurice Alphandary, which left James to play Jamie Leeder (Div 3 Individual Champion). In a great match James was superb and completed his maximum to take the team into a semi-final.
On Thursday C travelled to RAL D: with Roger away Nathan deputised. Although Bob Hopgood hit a maximum for RAL, James and Ian won two singles matches each and took the doubles to come away with a draw. Nathan acquitted himself well and won a game.
Moreton D: Drayton D turned up at Moreton expecting to play a handicap quarter final, but D did not know about it. Hopefully it will be rearranged. They also had a league tie scheduled against Abingdon I on Thursday: I have no information.
Moreton E:  had a free week.

League Update, week ending 10th March 2006

Match reports:

Moreton A: had another relegation battle beating Abingdon B away to make them almost certainly safe. Abingdon could only field two players with Paul Borrowdale injured. Chris Hansell won his two, and combined with Joe to win the doubles. Joe and Roger A both beat Russell Eaton but lost to Janet Brown. There were some close matches in the 8-2 final score.
Moreton B: visited Abingdon G and won 7-3 with Cameron again in top form registering another maximum. Richard and Tim both lost to Division 3 champion Jamie Leeder, but promotion now appears certain.
Moreton C: had a poor evening against Sutton D losing 7-3 and swapping places with them in the league table. Roger T won two singles but lost narrowly to Sutton youngster Paul Oakley who hit a maximum.
Moreton D: entertained Letcombe C who arrived as league leaders. Nick Redding recorded a maximum, but Tak lost to the experienced John Long. However he and Mike both won two (inflicting a first duck for the season on Letcombe captain Roger Diamand). The 7-3 victory took D back to the top.
Moreton E: had a free week.

League Update, week ending 3rd March 2006

Match reports:
Another good week: all teams that had games won: it was 2nd pool round of the Handicap Shield.

Moreton A: had no match.
Moreton B: won 6-3 against Drayton C (from Division 2) with Cameron winning 3, Richard 2 and Tim 1. Drayton's John Gould, as might be expected of a Bristol Rovers fan, practised his heading against the gym stools, but luckily suffered nothing worse than grazed knees and a sore head. Moreton B won Group 5.
Moreton C: comfortably beat Abingdon K (of Division 4) 7-2. James won 3 and Roger T and Ian two apiece. Moreton C finished top of Group 4.
Moreton D: entertained Division 2 RAL C and won 8-1 with Tak and Nick R hitting maximums and Mike winning 2. Moreton D won Group 1.
Moreton E:  played away against Division 2 Drayton B and won 6-3. No details to hand. Unfortunately this Group was disrupted by the withdrawal of Abingdon B which may have denied the team the chance to qualify for the knockout stages.

Moreton A (Div 1): 9th - Roger A is 15th, Joe 30th in the individual rankings.
Moreton B: (Div 3): 1st - Tim is 1st in the individual rankings, Cameron 5th, Richard 6th
Moreton C: (Div 3): 6th - Roger T is 10th and Ian 13th individually.

League Update, week ending 24th Feb 2006

Match reports:
Moreton A: were at home to Sutton A in a relegation tussle with Sutton A in more trouble than our team. Sutton started well getting into a 5-2 lead. Then Joe stepped up to beat Mike Watts. Next Roger Abbott took on penholder Roger Perry and won the first 12-10. In the second Roger A's bat came away from its handle and nearly decapitated Paul. So Roger had to borrow Joe's bat to complete the match which appeared not to faze him, winning in 4. So the doubles was needed to steal a point: Roger had Joe's bat so Joe had to step down in favour of Paul. We lost the first two games, then mounted a comeback. Match point reached in the fifth. Paul does one of his lunges to make a successful return and hits the TV slumping to the floor. Roger Perry makes a good return and Roger A returns that. Richard Knight has an open table to win the match.... he puts it tamely in the net. We have our point and it's time to revive Paul and stanch the flow of blood from the back of his head. Paul off to the JR for three stitches but makes the point that he expects all to follow his example and die for the club if necessary. I wonder privately what upset Roger A so much that he had two attempts at removing his captain's head. Possibly something he learnt in Reading on his way from Oxford to Didcot.... don't ask!
Moreton B: were in double action: first Letcombe B, then Howbery B. Both resulted in 8-2 victories with Cameron hitting two excellent maximums, and Tim and Richard a pair of braces each (to keep their shorts up?). Tim and Howberys' captain John Talbot had a bit of a heated exchange at one stage but soon put their handbags down on got on with the table tennis. Had Tim known about Paul's expectations we might have got a good fight going but luckily good sense prevailed and Tim sends his apologies to any youngsters present that may have noticed . B move ever nearer to the championship and Howbery got a point in their fight against relgation.
Moreton C: got to Howbery B first, and Ian and Roger T both hit them for three in a 9-1 victory. James was in good form too, winning two singles and the doubles with Ian.
Moreton D v Moreton E looked on paper like it might be a whitewash for the Division 4 leaders especially when Tom Wigg failed to arrive for his league debut. But Nathan Cheong had other ideas and beat Mike Dawes and joined Charlie to win the doubles. Bodes well for next season!

League positions at 24 February 2006

Moreton A (Div 1): 9th - Roger A is 12th (of 59), Joe 29th in the individual rankings.
Moreton B: (Div 3): 1st - Tim is 1st, Cameron 3rd, Richard 4th.
Moreton C: (Div 3): 6th - Roger T is 10th, Ian 12th, James 27.
Moreton D: (Div 4): 1st - Tak is 2nd, Nick 3rd, Mike 8th.

League Update, week ending 17th Feb 2006

Match reports:
A good week, all teams that had games won !

Moreton A: were away to Drayton A who could only muster 2 players. Paul was injured so Chris Hansell stepped in and won his two matches. Roger Abbott won one and combined with Chris to win the doubles, so with the 3 walkovers we won 7-3. A third successive league victory which considerably eases relegation worries.
Moreton B: were also at Drayton (D team). Richard, Tim and Cameron 'did the business' completing a double whitewash, as they had done against Abingdon H in the previous league match.
Moreton C: had a visit from Abingdon G who included Division 3 champion, Jamie Leeder. This appeared to concentrate Roger T's mind and he recorded a maximum.
Ian won two, but lost narrowly to Jamie. With James on holiday, Tak subbed and registered a good win against the useful Maurice Alphandary - a good omen for next season when we hope Tak will be in Division 3. Ian and Roger had a rare doubles win (recovering from 2-1 down) to seal a 7-3 victory.
Moreton D: didn't come to the party having no scheduled match.
Moreton E:  won 8-2 away against a strong Grove team. Richard Redding and Bob Price won three apiece, and a close doubles together, and Martin added the eighth to get the extra point.

League positions at 19 February 2006

Moreton A (Div 1): 9th - Roger A is 16th, Joe 31st in the individual rankings.
Moreton B: (Div 3): 1st - Tim is 2nd in the individual rankings, Richard 5th, Cameron 8th
Moreton C: (Div 3): 6th - Roger T is 10th and Ian 13th individually.

League Update, week ending 10th Feb 2006

Match reports:
On Monday our Bidmead Cup squad of Joe, Cameron and Nick Redding visited Drayton for a semi-final tie. Nick got us off to a good start holding his nerve to win in four despite a setback in the third. Cameron then thrashed Division 1 Matt Davies which was a psychological blow to Drayton. Joe was unlucky to lose the third match, but soon Moreton had secured their final place with a 5-1 lead. The dead matches were played and the final score was 6-3.

Moreton A had no match.
Moreton B had a home handicap pool round tie against Abingdon D who had only two players. B won 8-1 with Tim and Richard Smith going unbeaten and Cameron suffering one very rare handicap defeat.
Moreton C had a home handicap pool round tie against Abingdon F who had only two players. All three C players lost their opening matches, with Roger throwing away a two game lead against Robert Cowan. So the match was 3-3 when James stepped in to beat Robert, and Roger avenged recent league defeats by Henri Wibowo. Ian brought the final score to 6-3 with a good win against Robert.
Moreton D had a home handicap pool round tie against Abingdon E who had only two players. Nick Redding won the first match to take the effective score to 4-0. But then the Division 2 team took control winning the last 5 matches helped by some tricky serves.
Moreton E's handicap match against Division 1 Abingdon B was cancelled, but they had a rearranged league match at Abingdon K. Despite problems with their geography (one player going to Moreton and another to France) the young team of Jess, Megan and Charlie came away with a point gained by Charlie's third win of the season.

League positions at 11 February 2006

Moreton A (Div 1): 10th - Roger A is 19th, Joe 31st in the individual rankings.
Moreton B: (Div 3): 1st - Tim is 2nd in the individual rankings, Richard 8th, Cameron 9th

League Update, week ending 3rd Feb 2006

Moreton A: had an important match against RAL A who were in 8th position in the league. Their players included the former (1995-2005) DDTTA President, Ron Liquorish, and the 1998 Over-70s Doubles World Champion, Alf Davies. Roger Abbott (maximum), Joe (2) and Chris Hansell (2) registered a fine 8-2 victory that sees them out of the relegation zone. Joe and Roger won the doubles.
Moreton B: with Didcot E and Abingdon F playing on Tuesday, had dropped to third. However, Richard, Cameron and Tim stormed back to the top, whitewashing bottom team Abingdon H, and still have games in hand over their rivals.
Moreton C: went to Didcot E intent on stealing a point or two from B's rivals. It was Ian's turn to shine winning two including inflicting a rare defeat on the division's top player, Howard Searle. Roger T won one, so gained two points from a 7-3 defeat.
Moreton D: had a free week.
Moreton E: our junior squad faced Abingdon J with Robert Saunders who naturally got a cheap maximum. However, Ollie had a good first win and teamed up with Charlie, who had won his 2nd singles match of the season, to win the doubles. This 7-3 defeat was enough to get the team off the bottom.

League positions at 29 January 2006

Moreton A (Div 1): 10th - Roger A is 18th, Joe 31st in the individual rankings.

League Update, week ending 27th Jan 2006

Moreton A: had a relegation scrap with bottom team Didcot C. They won 6-4 thanks to Roger Abbott's maximum and Joe and Paul winning one each. Paul and Roger secured the points winning the doubles. This was a great result, but more similar ones are needed if Moreton is to have a Division 1 presence next season.
Moreton B: faced Didcot E, the only team to have beaten them this season. Despite Howard Searle winning three and Cameron seemingly a bit rusty, our team managed a draw. Two to Richard, one each to Tim and Cameron. Tim and Richard won the doubles.
Moreton C: went to Didcot F and suffered an 8-2 reverse with Peter Sinclair getting a maximum. Roger T beat fellow chopper Bruce McKenzie (yawn) and James had a good win against Lionel Sheppard.
Moreton D: had a tricky visit to Grove and found Derrick Cain in top form. However, Tak won 2, and Nick and Mike one each. Tak and Nick won the doubles to earn a draw.
Moreton E: lost 10-0 at Sutton E.
