MORETON CADETS IN NATIONAL CADET LEAGUE

Moreton entered a Cadet team into the National Cadet League for the very first time. The matches in this league format are played over 4 weekends in the season at a single venue, Chesham High School, Bucks.

The first of these weekends (Sunday 17th October) saw the team matched against Ashford, Chesham ‘B’ and Southampton West in the top division. The opening game against Ashford saw an 8-1 winning start for the team, putting them into first place. Joe Cheong led the way with a comfortable 3 set victory against Ashford’s No.1, Jake McDonough. Paul Oakley quickly followed with a 3 set victory against No. 2 Ciaran Thapar. Unfortunately in the 3rd game James Goldsby-West was defeated in 3 sets by Peter Robinson. This may have been due to nerves as this was James’ debut NCL appearance; however this was quickly overcome, with James winning his next 2 games. From this point the team never looked back as the Moreton team raced to an 8-1 victory, winning all their subsequent games.

The second match against a strong Chesham B side was a closer affair but the team continued their winning ways with a 5-4 victory. In this game, James was rested and replaced by Nick Redding, who contributed well to the team although did not get the results he hoped for, losing to Darius Atashroo, Anthony Shaplan and Tobi Duncan. Nick was unlucky to lose to Anthony in 5 sets, finally conceding 8-11 in the deciding 5th set. Paul however had an excellent win against Anthony in 3 straight games. Anthony had earlier beaten the highly ranked Amy Taylor of Chesham A.

The 9th game of the match, with the score poised at 4-4, the deciding game saw a 5 set epic with Joe against Anthony. It was clear that both players enjoyed each others style as the match was a hard fought counter hitting and heavy looping game, with most points ‘won’ rather than ‘lost’. After losing the opening set, Joe won the next 2, but lost the 4th 16-18 to setup an exciting final set. This was duly won by Joe 11-6 to win the game and match for Moreton. This left the team lying in second place overall.

The third match was against a very strong Southampton West team, where James was brought back to replace Paul in this final match. The Southampton team lived up to their expectation and won 2-7, although the score line did not reflect the closeness of the games, with two 5-setters just going the wrong way.

After this first weekend of NCL, the team are in 3rd position out of 6 teams in Division 1.

2004 CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL

The rescheduled Moreton Spring Handicap Tournament Final for 2004 was played on Wednesday 10th June between Joe Cheong and Richard Smith.

Joe conceding a 2 point advantage to Richard started with a lot of confidence. His timing of the ball and strong hitting soon overcame the advantage given to Richard, winning the first game 21-14. In the second game Richard changed his tactic to force Joe onto his backhand side to stop the counter hitting. This was a successful tactic as Richard easily won the second 16-21. The third and deciding game was a closer affair, with both players knowing that this was their last chance to be tactically correct. This time Joe proved his tactic was a winning formula, winning a closer game, 21-18 and thus the Moreton Inaugural Championship.

The presentation to winner and runners-up was made by Dr Roger Templeman.

ANNUAL CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP UPDATE

The inaugural Morton Table Tennis Club Spring Tournament took place on Wednesday 26th May 2004. The field comprised of fifteen club members who were arranged into groups of four. With the group winners and runners-up going forward into the main handicap competition and the 3rd and 4th placed going into a Consolation knock-out. This totalled to 35 matches for the whole event!

The competition in each group was intense, with eagerness and skill from young and old alike. There were many close results, with some matches concluding in a third and final game, proving that the handicaps equaled out in the end.

The first Consolation semi-final was between Jessica and James, with James winning 21-12, 21-15. The second was between Cameron and Roger H, with Cameron winning a very close 3rd game, 15-21, 21-16, 25-23.

In the main event Joe overcame his dad two games to nil in the first semi-final, and Richard S beating Roger T, 22-20, 21-17 in the second semi-final. At this stage it was agreed by all to delay the Final until the following week as it was getting late into the evening. This Final will now take place on Wednesday 2nd June 2004, and will be contested between Joe and Richard S, with Richard having a handicap advantage of a two point start.

Many thanks to all who assisted with the smooth running of this event.

DDTTA HANDICAP FINAL 2004 – SUNDAY 25th APRIL

The Handicap final of the DDTTA Closed Championship guaranteed a Moreton victory as it was contested between veteran Roger Templeman and Cadet Joe Cheong. With both players having much local support, the match was contested in a very friendly atmosphere.

Joe starting with a 2 point handicap advantage took control of the game with some consistent topspin loops. Roger’s solid defence, which served him well on the way to the final, was starting to show some tiredness causing some unforced errors. Joe took the first game 11-5.

In the second game Joe focused on more power, forcing Roger away from the table and allowing Joe more time to create chances to move the ball onto his forehand to gain the point with a winning drive. Roger tried to change tactics by playing more attacking shots, but this was in vain as Joe took the second game 11-4.

The third game was a closer affair as Roger used his serve to greater effect causing Joe a few problems with the return. However this was temporary as Joe continued with a consistent topspin game which took him to match point very quickly. Roger tried gallantly to save the match but Joe took the third and final game 11-9, thus winning the set and match 11-5, 11-4, 11-9.

On route to the final Roger had some excellent wins against Moreton club colleague Paul Cheong, Pete Dasher and Mike Watts (Snr), both from the Sutton club.

2004 JUNIOR TITLE WON BY MORETON CADET.

Joe Cheong, seeded fourth in Friday’s DDTTA Junior closed, came through to beat Number One seed Tom Whale in the final (11-7, 11-1, 4-11, 11-5).

In the Qualifying Group ‘B’ Stages, Joe met Tom in his sixth and final group match and narrowly lost (11-5, 8-11, 14-16, 7-11). This loss concluded Joe as runners-up in the group of seven, resulting in him playing Group ‘A’ winner, number three seed Lubo Spassov, in the Semi-Final.

The Semi-Final was started strongly by Lubo who took the opening game 5-11. Joe began the second with a more positive attitude trying to stop Lubo’s forehand drive by forcing many hits to his backhand and then forehand winners to the vacated space on other wing. This proved successful, resulting in an 11-8 win by Joe in the second game. The same tactic was deployed in the third and fourth games ensuring a win for Joe (5-11, 11-8, 11-5, 14-12).

Tom Whale reached the final by beating Paul Oakley in the other Semi-Final.

The Final was a very quick counter hitting game between Joe and Tom, with fast loops and hits from both players, but this time with a different result from the group stages. This win from Joe was added to the DDTTA Cadet Championship which he won 10 days previously at the same Abingdon venue.

There were some other notable wins by Moreton juniors during the evening. However, wins by James Goldsby-West and Nick Redding were not enough to qualify them through the group stages as they finish third and fourth in their respective groups. Another notable win was by Nathan Cheong who recorded his first ever win in tournament conditions.

ROGER TEMPLEMAN KILLS HIS DUCK !!!

Roger finally well and truly got rid of his DUCK image by winning 6 out of 6 games in the last 2 days. The highlight was his maximum against Sutton F, beating leading player, Stuart Walker in a closely contested 5 set match (11-9, 7-11, 11-8, 13-15, 11-9). In his previous game against Drayton D, he only conceded 25 points in 9 games, scoring 99 points himself.
A warm welcome back to the Redding’s. After a long absence from the game this season, father and son duo of Richard and Nick returned back to the tables against Sutton G, helping the Moreton C team to a 6-4 victory. Both Nick and Richard showed no ‘ring rust’ as they swung into match play action for Moreton.
Joe Cheong also had a successful night winning 3 against Sutton G, maintaining his top position in the League with 27 wins from 30, and a 90% average. During the night he beat Paul Oakley who was the division's 2nd-placed player, avenging a defeat from earlier in the season.
This win moved the 'C' team back to top position above Moreton B, who the previous night beat Grove 9-1. This victory was secured with maximums from Richard Smith and Mike Dawes, with two from James Goldsby-West.
