Moreton Player takes Top Honours in OTTA Top 10 Invitation

Oxfordshire Table Tennis Association held their Top 10 Junior Invitation Tournament on Saturday 23rd April, at Moreton Table Tennis Club.
Ten juniors from the county, representing the Banbury, Didcot, and Oxford leagues were invited to play in an end of season invitation tournament. Players were invited on the basis of their eligibility as a junior for the next playing season, so two of the county’s top juniors in their last playing year were not eligible.

Home club Moreton were represented by three players, Joe Cheong, James Goldsby-West and Cameron Bowen.

Play started with 2 groups of 5, with each player playing the other. The opening two matches set the scene for the day, indicating that the level of play would be of a high standard and that no individual player would find it easy to dominate the competition.

Group ‘A’ saw an opening match between two Didcot league players, the ever improving Gary Wheeler, and home club player Cameron Bowen. Cameron started the stronger winning the opening set 11-8. However this did not deter Gary, as after some fine hitting he took the next 3 games and the match 6, 9, 0.

Group ‘B’ saw an opening 5 setter between Sam Benwell (Oxford) and Alex Boyd (Banbury), with Sam pulling back a 1-2 deficit, winning -9, 7, -12, 8, and 7.

The second Group ‘A’ match saw Robert Hudson (Didcot), the eventual group winner, beat number 1 seed Adam Wells in 5 ends, 6, -8, -5, 9, and 6. This in fact was the first of Robert’s 4 fifth set victories of the day!!

On the next table, Didcot and Moreton club mates James Goldsby-West and Joe Cheong played each other. James was in fine form and played some excellent attacking shots. However Joe’s consistency proved the stronger, narrowly winning 9, 8, and 9.

After the group matches, the winner and runner-up from both groups were placed together to playoff for position 1-4, with the remaining 6 playing for position 5-10. Joe made the top group after finishing first, and James and Cameron the second group, having finished fourth and fifth.

The match between James Goldsby-West and Gary Wheeler in the second group had much drama as James pulled a 0-2 deficit to a 3-2 win against his younger opponent. This was achieved with a mixture of attack and defence, taking the last three games 11-2, 17-15, 17-15 to secure the victory and sixth place overall.

Cameron however was finding the day difficult as he struggled to find his form. His only win of the day was secured in a five setter against Sam Benwell (Oxford), 11-8, 8-11, 12-14, 11-7, 11-2.

Joe’s key match in the final group was against the undefeated Group ‘A’ winner Robert Hudson. Joe knew that the winner of this particular match would most probably be the overall competition winner. Joe and Robert last met in the Didcot & District TTA Junior Final at the beginning of the month, where Joe was victorious with a 3-0 win. This time Joe did not have it all his own way as Robert fought very hard to avenge this defeat. Robert took the third set and had 3 game points to win the fourth after being 10-7 up. Joe attacked each point and won the next 5 consecutively, taking the game and the match 11-7, 11-3, 5-11, 12-10.

The result of this match meant that there was a 3 way tie for the title. After a few moments of complicated count back mathematics by match referee Neil Hurford, the winner was declared as Moreton’s Joe Cheong (5 for and 4 against), second place to Adam Wells (5 for and 5 against) and third to Robert Hudson (4 for and 5 against).

Final Positions:-

3rd – Robert Hudson (Didcot)
4th – Daniel Shurrock (Banbury)
5th – Joe Davis (Banbury)
